Leading Through Creativity

You can't depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.
- Mark Twain

Imagination is more important than knowledge.
- Albert Einstein

The best way to have good ideas is to have lots of ideas.
- Linus Pauling

When employees and/or leaders are stuck in the face of new challenges, frustrated by the pace and scope of change, unable to see the positive side of risk, or when an organization is in a creative rut, it's time for some creative thought re-engineering - from linear to lateral!

VTS Creativity and Innovation Training provides tools that help people to embrace new ideas, generate ideas more quickly, think and act on their feet, overcome the fear of the unknown, remove blocks to creativity, and see new challenges as opportunities rather than problems.

Sample Activity

Person 1 faces a group of three people (A, B, and C). A fires a word at 1, and 1 responds with the first word that comes into their head. B fires a word at 1, and 1 responds with the first word that comes into their head. C fires a word at 1, and 1 responds with the first word that comes into their head.

The cycle is repeated several times.

The words are fired in quick succession not giving Person 1 the chance to judge their ideas before expressing them. This activity focuses on spontaneity and free association.

Participant Response

"I felt a funny 'tweak' somewhere in the nether regions of my brain."

"As the day went on I felt like I was exercising a muscle in a totally new way. I had no idea I had so many ideas."

"We learned that it wasn't so much about the end result but rather staying in the moment and just having fun seeing where we could end up together."

"You could feel old thought patterns crumbling away."

"After this, I certainly have a better sense of what it is to think laterally - the new perspectives were most welcome!"
